4.5 Million Patients’ Records Hacked in Major U.S. Hospital Breach

What happened?
Social Security numbers, names, addresses, birth dates and telephone numbers of 4.5 million people were stolen when hackers infiltrated the Community Health Systems, Inc. computer network. The organization, one of the largest U.S. hospital operators, announced the breach on Monday, August 18.

The organization and its security contractor, Mandiant, forensics unit of FireEye Inc., believe the attackers are based in China. The hackers used malware and other technology to copy and transfer the stolen data from the network in April or June 2014. The data includes patient information for those referred or treated in one of Community Health Systems’ facilities within the past five years.

Montana State Health Department Breach Affects 1.3 Million

The Montana State health department confirmed on June 24, 2014 that a security breach had occurred earlier in May. The personal information of 1.3 million people was compromised by a hacker that gained unauthorized access to one of the company’s computer servers.

Information such as Social Security numbers, bank account information, names, addresses and dates of birth were exposed as a result of this breach. In addition, parts of medical records like diagnoses, treatment, health conditions, prescriptions and insurance information were also accessed. Continue reading
